Code of Ethics

At the 2018 National Congress & Business Expo, a new Code of Ethics was launched by then-National President, Ricki Bruhn.

The updated Code of Ethics was created with input from federation partners in every state and territory in Australia, a professional Ethicist and endorsed by the National Board. It reflects the primary professional values agreed on by the Australian local government community.

It is a statement of abiding principles for members.

  1. Recognise that the chief function of local government is to serve the best interests of the community.

  2. Be committed to the concepts of effective and democratic local government.

  3. To demonstrate by word and action the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity in all stakeholder relationships, build the trust and respect of the elected members and appointed officials, employees and the public.

  4. To ensure fairness and impartiality govern a member’s decisions.

  5. Not leverage their position for personal gain or benefit.

  6. Conflicts of interest must be avoided and acted upon according to reporting procedures.

  7. Refrain from all political activities which may undermine public confidence in professional administrators.
